For teenagers, YouTube restricts content it considers <\/span>inappropriate for viewers under 18<\/a><\/strong>.<\/strong> It\u2019s a good starting point, but we also recommend the following tips to help keep teens safe while exploring Shorts.<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Start with a supervised experience<\/b><\/p>\n

YouTube’s supervised experience can be set up through Google\u2019s <\/span>Family Link<\/span><\/a>, allowing parents to manage content settings for teens and monitor the Shorts they watch. With linked accounts, a parent can choose between 3 content control levels (Explore, Explore More, and Most of YouTube) depending on the child\u2019s age and maturity level. As well as viewing a teen\u2019s watch and search history, a parent can also disable comments and live chat, and set daily screen time limits for YouTube – helping to reduce the risks of excessive screen time.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Set limits for Shorts<\/b><\/p>\n

With YouTube\u2019s supervised experience, you can set daily limits on how long your child spends watching Shorts, ranging from 0 to 2 hours. If you don\u2019t want your child to use the feature at all, temporarily or permanently, <\/span>setting the time limit to 0 effectively prevents your child from accessing Shorts.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

We recommend keeping the default screen time reminders for users aged 13-17: <\/b>YouTube gives \u201c Take a break\u201d\u00a0 and \u201cBedtime\u201d reminders to encourage young users to be mindful about their screen time.
